The education of pupils with medical needs is a partnership. It is essential that health and other agencies work closely together to provide the support to enable a pupil with medical needs to receive appropriate education.
Guidance ‘Access to Education for Children and Young People with Medical Needs’
At the Medical Needs Unit we follow the above Guidance, believing that this does indeed engender a unified and positive support base for each young person at the Unit. We work closely with all agencies involved in a young person’s life. This can include CAMHS (Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service), Social Services, Family Support services, educational psychologists, GPs, school nurses and hospitals.
We organise and attend multi-agency meetings on a regular basis to ensure good communication and establish a clear way forward for each pupil.
Prior to leaving the Medical Needs Unit each pupil and their parents are part of a meeting with Unit and college staff to discuss their needs before moving on.
We realise the importance of working closely with parents and carers and strive to include them in discussions and planning. We have frequent telephone or email contact and encourage feedback. Every pupil receives a formal end of year report but we also update parents on both concerns and progress on an ongoing basis.
